Day 1 -- Arrival
Monday, March 15, 2010 at 6:40PM We made it! One minivan, six passengers, 8 hours, and the thing is done. Its good to be able to move my legs from a ninety degree angle.
We've only just arrived, so we haven't been able to see much, yet. The driving took a little longer than we had estimated, so we arrived late for the reception. Well, almost too late. Upon walking across the skybridge from the parking garage to the body of the hotel itself, we were welcomed by a wall of jostling professors and graduate students. The check-in desk was on the other side of this swell of scholars, so we had to pull something not unlike the crossing of Red Sea, though it did cost me my travel mug (poor thing broke in one harder jostle).
So far, I have noticed that I am, in fact, wearing the Grad Student uniform. Plaid and jeans seem to be the in thing. Who knew? I usually just catch flak for being a lumberjack back at State.
We are opting to forgo the proceedings this evening in favor of a night of margaritas, which to me does sound an awful lot more enticing than jazz. I'm hoping to use the extra time to peruse the scheduling for the week and hit it hard tomorrow morning. I'm interested to see what the offerings are at the Show & Tell later this week (including the Xampler).
More to say later on this evening, but I can hear that salt calling to me.
